Abstract

In a clinical setting, it is not uncommon to observe an increase in the frequency and severity of the symptoms associated with addiction to alcohol consumption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical value of using alcohol as a mood regulator in a comparison with alcohol as a mood regulator. This study included a comparison of three alcohol-based mood-regulating interventions: the baclofen (Baclofen, Baclofen-B, and Estrat-B) and placebo (placebo) groups. A comparison of the duration of alcohol-associated symptoms and the intensity of the symptoms was performed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II. The main outcome measures were the frequency of the symptoms and the severity of the symptoms in relation with alcohol intake. The results were analysed using parametric and non-parametric statistical methods. The duration of alcohol-associated symptoms was significantly longer in Baclofen compared with placebo (difference -2.6 days, P = 0.04) while the severity of alcohol-associated symptoms was significantly more intense in the Baclofen group (difference -0.2 days, P = 0.003) while the severity of alcohol-associated symptoms was significantly more intense in the Baclofen group (difference -0.1 days, P = 0.05). The duration of alcohol-associated symptoms in Baclofen compared with placebo group was significantly longer in the Baclofen group. These findings suggest that alcohol as a mood regulator may be a useful alternative to alcohol as a mood regulator in a clinical setting. However, further studies are needed to confirm these results and to determine the effectiveness of this mood regulator treatment for a wide range of patients.
